Leadership Development Academy
Developing the Capacity of Philadelphia Youth Basketball’s Indigenous Leaders
The Philadelphia Youth Basketball “Leadership Development Academy (LDA)” has been designed to create an extraordinary opportunity to support the development of high-potential, emerging leaders who are closely connected to our organization and come from the similar communities and circumstances as the kids whom we serve. It’s high capacity leaders like you who we believe can empower the community and become potent and influential leaders in your personal and professional lives, as well as in the lives of our youth.
We are confident that this experience will deepen and broaden the leadership knowledge, dispositions and skills of key PYB employees and partners to most effectively drive our youth development AND community empowerment mission, while at the same time grow the leadership capabilities of the LDA participants. Moreover, the LDA will become perhaps the greatest manifestation of our belief that lasting social impact and social change occurs when leaders who are “of, by, for, and with” the community are deeply involved in all dimensions of organizational leadership capacity to change the conditions in which young people live.
PYB indubitably believes in the need for developing high-potential, indigenous leaders from lower-socioeconomic communities of color. Through our various program and organization building initiatives, we have worked purposefully and intentionally with many grassroots leaders within the communities that we serve, including members of our staff team, our board of directors, vendors, volunteers, and partners. Despite our efforts, we recognize that more needs to be done to support emerging, indigenous leaders with high-value opportunities to become potent and influential leaders in their personal and professional lives, as well as in their communities. We believe that we can play the role of an organizational ally that supports their evolution into potent and influential in each of these areas.
Our goal is to launch the academy with an inaugural cohort comprised of overwhelmingly men and women of color who have proven to be high potential leaders, are authentic to the communities in which we work, have a “growth mindset” and desire to improve themselves various realms of their lives, and possess a strong belief that young people and communities in challenging circumstances can transform behind inspirational leadership.
In Partnership with The McNulty Leadership Program
We are pleased to announce that Umi Howard, Senior Director at McNulty Leadership Program (MLP), has committed to the role of cohort facilitator of our Leadership Development Academy. Under Umi’s stewardship, the MLP has purposefully crafted the LDA using a research-based design approach. The design approach places an emphasis on building a community that models peer support, vulnerability, risk taking, and the intellectual and emotional engagement required to develop leaders. Together, MLP and PYB will strive to create a transformational learning experience that enables you to grow your unique leadership style and practice in fundamental ways.
